University Policies for Active Shooters
I researched active shooter policies from Texas Woman's University, University of North Texas, and The University of Oregon. They all had the same policy for responding which was "Run.Hide.Fight". Meaning you run away first, if you can get away, find any exit and keep running and don't stop until your positive that you are away and safe from the threat. The second option was to hide, if you cannot run, then finding a place to hide and to remember that you want cover over concealment. The best places are ones without windows and lockable doors, also making sure to make it appear as if no one is in the room with lights off. The third and final thing you can do is to fight. The best way to go about it is via surprise, and to do something that will disarm and obstruct their vision. Upon exiting any building or places the track took place it's helpful to remember always having your hands up and not making any sudden movements. It was very easy to find the procedures as each university had them clearly listed on their website. All three universities used a video to explain procedures clearly. Two had more information listed and spelled out so that you really didn't have to watch the video, UNT did not have any information listed but just a link to their video and UO had some helpful tips. TWU had the most in depth information listed on their website. I think the video did a pretty good job on procedures and I didn't have anything to add.

Hi Crystal,
ReplyDeleteThe run, hide, or fight policy is useful and easy for everybody to understand. I also like how they have videos in the procedures because there are people who are visual learners. It is unfortunate that we need to consider these situations in today's society.
